Since 2003, the Corporation has been responsible for repairs and maintenance in 14 communities through a funding agreement with Territory Housing. Historically, these services were delivered by contractors, however, it was identified to reduce costs and improve better employment outcomes for Aboriginal people that the Corporation should develop its own R&M teams.
In July 2008 the Corporation established its own maintenance team, which consisted of 5 team members. This team’s main responsibility was to undertake ground maintenance. In January 2009, the Corporation established an R&M team to provide repairs and maintenance services to the 249 community houses, 6 transitional houses and 45 properties at Berrimah Estate. Currently, the Corporation operates 3 R&M and 2 ground maintenance teams, which are responsible for services in 14 communities.
The R&M teams are resourced with vehicles, workman trailers and necessary tools to perform their duties. The teams consist of 2 members, a supervisor (tradesman) and a trades assistant (undertaking studies). The Corporation is proud that 5 of 6 the team members are of Aboriginal descent.
The Corporation maintains a list of 12 preferred contractors who undertake trade activities in specific fields, including painting, plumbing and electrical services. These companies are either Aboriginal owned and/or operated; or have Aboriginal people employed and/or Aboriginal people undertaking training.
